I needed to create a last minute birthday cake for a friend and don't feel my piping and smoothing skills are very good so I decided to try copying a reversed design on wax paper freezing then placing it on the cake. It worked better than expected.

I just printed a design reversed or mirrored then covered with wax paper so when you are piping your actually piping backwards. I did use a toothpick to clean up some edges and make sure my icing was adheared to the wax paper. I piped the writing first, then edges, then filled. I popped it in the freezer between steps. I did one last thick layer froze again then flipped it into my cake added some basic border and it was an easy cake for someone with shaky hands. One thing I would have done different is warmed my icing especially for the filing phase. There are some air bubbles and gaps that could have been avoided.

Hope this helps someone else who doesn't feel confident in their piping game!
